Yayoi Kusama at the Fondation Beyeler, Riehen
From October 12, 2025, to January 25, 2026, magnificent works by the 92-year-old Japanese artist will be on display at the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen.
The Fondation Beyeler in Riehen will thus present the first retrospective of the famous Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama (born 1929, Matsumoto) in Switzerland. Organized in close collaboration with the artist and her studio, the exhibition provides a comprehensive insight into Kusama’s artistic work spanning seven decades. On display will be iconic works as well as older pieces that have never been seen in Europe, along with new productions and one of her popular Infinity Mirror Rooms. The artist, who is one of the superstars of contemporary art, has achieved cult status with her exploration of repetitive patterns and structures—notably through her characteristic polka dots and mirror rooms, which transport viewers into infinite worlds. The exhibition highlights the diversity of artistic media Kusama has worked with over the years, including painting, sculpture, installations, drawing, collage, happenings, live performances, fashion, and literature.
Yayoi Kusama is still productive at 92. The artist, famous for her polka dots, lives in Tokyo. The Yayoi Kusama Museum in Tokyo hosts exhibitions that change every six months. The five-story building is located in the Shinjuku district. Nearby are the artist’s studio and the psychiatric clinic where she has lived voluntarily since 1977.
