Fernando Botero has died at the age of 91

Fernando Botero was one of the most important artists in Latin America: with his unusual formal language, the Colombian celebrated life and sensuality. He always remained connected to his homeland and was often political in his working methods.

Botero was considered one of the most important contemporary artists in Latin America. His exhibitions achieved record numbers: His show of work at the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City was seen by 300,000 visitors. He was most famous for his lush paintings of people and animals and his disproportionate sculptures.

“I have never painted a fat woman,” he once said ironically. Yet it was precisely with his voluptuous ladies that he achieved world fame.
